PRIDE
by Griselda Alvarez
In the P. R. I. D. E program, we get prepared for the jobs in different fields we are interested in. It is mostly for jobs like cooking or for computer jobs. In this program, "P" stands for pharmacy, "R" stands for retail, "I" stands for information technology, "D" stands for distribution, and "E" stands for education.
In Culinary Arts, every one or two weeks, we cook what ever the teacher tells us to cook. We are in groups of four and one person in each group is a chef, one is the chef's helper, one is the supplier, and is the housekeeper. We have to always work fast because in most of the days, the class only lasts 45 minutes. By learning to move fast, it will prepare the participants in the program to prepare a dish in a short amount of time.
What we make in this cooking class are muffins, cheese omelets, spaghetti, brownies, chicken terazzini, cheese sticks, pies, and much much more. We are going to cook more things. My favorite foods that I am interested in cooking so far are the muffins and the brownies.
Also, this helps all of the students in the program to have more chances in going to a college they wish for. Around April 23, 2003, the sophomores who are participants are going to do a test involving reading, math, science, and much more. If they pass, the colleges in Chicago will check your grades to see if they want to accept them. In the summer, we can go to Daley College in order to receive college credits. When they start to go to college, they get to be sophomores instead of freshmen.
The computer jobs that you might have are like being a computer technician, information technology for computers and some other jobs. Those who are interested they have to contact someone who belongs in P. R. I. D. E. program.
In case you or anybody else is interested, go to Mrs. Crandal and ask for a package contract that it explains what the P. R. I. D. E. program is all about. So I guarantee you that if you join the program, you will not regret it. Just make sure you do 100 service learning hours!
